POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Policy and Strategic Initiatives Manager
REPORTS TO: SHEA Executive Director
MAIN FUNCTION: Directs and facilitates policy activities of SHEA in  
collaboration with Board and Committees and the Executive Director to  
ensure active representation of SHEA policy positions. Collaborates  
with Executive Director and SHEA leadership to develop and execute  
initiatives that support the SHEA strategic plan.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), founded in  
1980 to advance the application of the science of healthcare  
epidemiology is a growing society of 1,300 members. SHEA applies  
epidemiologic principles and prevention strategies to a wide range of  
quality-of-care issues. It works to promote the highest quality of  
patient care and healthcare worker safety in all clinical settings.  
SHEA’s high reputation and success is a result of its focus on  
science, research and education in seeking solutions to the most  
challenging issues of infection prevention and control. SHEA is  
strengthened by its active membership in all branches of medicine,  
public health, and healthcare epidemiology.

The Director oversees and executes activities that define and  
disseminate SHEA’s policy positions and clinical guidelines to both  
member and external audiences. The incumbent facilitates SHEA  
leadership participation in policy development and response, works to  
identify and create strategic plans to showcase SHEA policy positions  
and clinical guidelines and collaborates with the Executive Director  
on initiatives and financial development efforts that promote the  
society’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities

Staffs Board Public Policy and Guidelines Development Committees,  
including setting agendas, managing communications to members,  
coordinating Committee activities and ensuring project timelines and  
deliverables are met.
Develops communication tools and content for membership information  
about policy and strategic initiatives of the organization, including  
website content. Develops monthly update for member newsletter and  
ensures timely communication to members and organizational leadership.
Collaborates with Executive Director and Public Policy Committee on  
developing materials, analyses and correspondence, and communicating  
policy positions of the organization at the federal and state level.  
Works to proactively identify opportunities for SHEA involvement in  
policy response and policy development at federal and state levels.
Collaborates with Executive Director and relevant Board Committees to  
design and manage strategic initiatives that conform to the SHEA  
Strategic Plan.
Serves as liaison for SHEA HQ to collaborative partnerships with  
external organizations, including associations, professional  
societies, government bodies, and health care industry.
Collaborates with Executive Director to cultivate relationships with  
potential partners, including industry, government agency, foundation  
and other organizations.
In the absence of the Executive Director, serves as operational  
manager for SHEA headquarters staff and official liaison for the Board  
of Directors.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in policy or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
At least 3-5 years experience in federal and/or state policy,  
including research and analysis, issues management, coalition  
development, policy liaison, and communication.
At least 3 years of project management experience.
Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external  
stakeholders to achieve SHEA goals.
Confidence and demonstrated skill in written and oral communication.
Ability to represent the organization in multiple venues.
Ability to develop proposals for strategic initiatives, including  
budgets and project timelines.
Self-starter with ability to formulate program plans and project  
timelines from concept to deliverable.
Ability to participate in periodic travel.
