Please pass the following along as appropriate. Note there is a
short suspense date as the next basic training class begins on
Monday, May 14, 2007.
> Dear PMI/PMF Alumni:
>
> The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is looking
> for federal government attorneys to volunteer for a 6-month (or
> shorter, they’re flexible) rotation as a Special Assistant U.S.
> Attorney (SAUSA) in the Office’s Misdemeanor Trial Section. As a
> SAUSA you are assigned to either the criminal or domestic violence
> units, and will be on your feet every day representing the United
> States in D.C. Superior Court handling hundreds of criminal cases
> ranging from simple assault, drug/gun possessions, theft,
> prostitution, destruction of property, etc. You will be personally
> responsible for conducting discovery, accepting pleas, arguing pre-
> trial motions, detention/suppression hearings, or sentencings, and
> trying cases investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department
> (MPD), Uniformed Secret Service, U.S. Park Police, and other local
> law enforcement organizations. While most of your misdemeanor
> offense prosecutions will be bench trials, the opportunity for jury
> trials is also possible.
>
> The detail starts with a 3-week basic training course (which is
> outstanding, easily on-par with similar training I’ve had by NITA
> or at the DOJ’s National Advocacy Center) and upon graduation
> you’re immediately in the courtroom: examining witnesses, handling
> evidence, and making arguments (and if you’re like me, you’ll be
> glad there’s no jury seated for your first couple of trials). I
> think this program is a unique opportunity to experience the
> criminal justice system at its most basic level, and would benefit
> a PMF regardless of whether they intend to become a trial attorney;
> SAUSAs gain a new perspective on issues such as economic
> disadvantage, addiction, and mental illness that will inevitably
> inform their decision making when they return to their public
> policy careers.
>
> Some administrative details:
>
> - Applicants do not need to be in working as an attorney at their
> current agency
>
> - A license to practice in DC is NOT required, but applicants must
> be members in good standing of a State/the DC bar(s)
>
> - There is NO security clearance requirement
>
> - Any pay grade is welcome (home agency must agree to handle
> matters like time keeping, pay and annual/sick leave as if SAUSA
> was still working there)
>
> Applicants must submit a resume as soon as possible to AUSA Dan
> Friedman, Director of Training, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the
> District of Columbia, atDaniel.Friedman at usdoj.gov. Dan will
> conduct an interview with the applicant prior to accepting an
> attorney into the program.
>
> As a former PMI/PMF myself, I’d be happy to talk about my
> experiences as a SAUSA with anyone interested at the number below.
> Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request.
>
> Sincerely,
>
