CONGRESSIONAL BRIEFING CONFERENCE FOR PRESIDENTIAL MANAGEMENT FELLOWS
Conducted by
The Government Affairs Institute at Georgetown University
Dates: February 28-March 4, 2005 and May 23-27, 2005
The Government Affairs Institute (GAI) at Georgetown University is pleased
to announce that it will offer two Congressional Briefing Conferences for
Presidential Management Fellows in FY2005. GAI has been conducting
congressional programs for executive branch personnel for nearly forty
years, and conducted programs for the Presidential Management Fellows
(Formerly Intern) Program since its inception.
This five-day course is tailored especially for Presidential Management
Fellows and, like all GAI courses, is conducted on Capitol Hill in order to
provide participants with a hands-on understanding of congressional process
and procedure as well as the culture that is the United States Congress.
During the five days participants will be provided with a comprehensive look
at how Congress is organized; the key players and their roles; how the
legislative process really works; and how Congress directly affects the
daily operations of every department and agency in the executive branch.
Presentations will be offered by Members of Congress, congressional staff,
academics, lobbyists, journalists, and executive branch officials. Topics
covered will include:
- leadership, organization, and party structure
- the authorization, appropriations, and budget processes
- the role of committees and committee hearings
- personal and committee staff
- relations with the executive branch
- congressional oversight
- the role of media and special interests
During the five day course, time will be provided to attend committee
hearings and observe floor action. Participants will be expected to attend
all sessions of the course.
